Usage Tips
Strap Tightness
Using two hands (right hand on the strap, left hand on the cap), attach the blue non-elastic band near the front of the Velcro patch so it is snug. This will prevent the jaw from lowering while jaw muscles are relaxed during sleep. Then add just a small amount of additional upwards force with the elastic band, attaching it slightly behind the blue strap. This keeps the teeth in gentle contact. (Putting on the Dual Band is demonstrated in the video on our homepage.) As per the graph on the Further Information page, when the jaw is closed the applied force should be minimal and wearing the Dual Band should be comfortable.
Ability to Open Jaw
The Knightsbridge Dual Band is designed to keep the jaw elevated when the jaw muscles are relaxed during sleep. The tightness of the straps should be such that the user is able to lower the jaw when he/she tries to do so.
Strap placement
Pass the straps under the jaw near the front of the jaw, and attach the straps near the front of the Velcro patch. This provides the most vertical orientation of the lift so as to work with the natural rotation of the jaw.
Heat retention
To provide vertical lift, a "full cap" construction is required. This will inherently result in some degree of heat retention. The three layer net-mesh of the Premium and Air Deluxe and the 100% Indian manta cotton of the Plus are designed to provide a cap which is light and breathable. The Air Deluxe, because of the ear holes, is cooler and more breathable than the Premium, and Premium is cooler and more breathable than the Plus. It may be helpful to slightly adjust room temperature or blanket thickness.
Mouth vs. nose snoring
The Knightsbridge Dual Band can be utilized without CPAP to reduce or prevent mouth snoring via its elevation of the jaw which widens the air passage and may also facilitate closing of the mouth. The user may still experience nasal snoring. However, nasal snoring is typically less deleterious to sleep quality than mouth snoring.
The Velcro of the Rear Size-Adjustment Strap
The portion of the rear size-adjustment strap which is mounted on the rear of the cap has the more scratchy, male Velcro, while the softer, female portion of the Velcro is on the blue strap. This is done for comfort so that if the Velcro on the blue strap extends beyond the patch on the cap, then soft female Velcro will be in contract with your head. This design however has the drawback that any exposed male Velcro on the cap may scratch against your pillow. If you find the exposed male Velcro to be problematic, we suggest you purchase a swatch of female Velcro from a fabric or hardware store, cut it to match the shape of the exposed portion of the male Velcro, and attach it thereto.
Nasal Dilators
Nasal dilators are devices that are placed in the openings of the nose to widen the air passage and make nasal breathing more comfortable (for people who are using the Knightsbridge without a CPAP machine.) Our recommendations are the NasalAid or the Slebaonos. (The NasalAid looks a little intimidating and is a bit more expensive than the others, but it is very comfortable and we feel it is worth the price.)
Customizations
We appreciate that people have different sleep needs. Customizations such as additional padding, left-side Velcro, and Small and XXL sizing are available upon request.
Washing Instructions
Attach straps to Velcro patches and hand wash with mild soap or detergent in warm water. Hang to dry. For even drying, hang from looped straps.
